The veil covered her eyes along with the rest of her face.
They say she wore it in adherence to a religious practice long ago discarded,
all but forgotten except for reminders in art.

Upon first encounter you face a blank wall of silk,
alluring and disconcerting.
You witness no facial expressions,
No rolling of the eyes,
No impish grin,
but over time you encounter these as they emerge through her voice
with its
many rolling inflections and tones,
(flowing, winding like the ancient river that sustained her people all those years.)

Over time the barriers between you two grow thin,
as her soul pours through  g a p s  in the fibers.

Her humor, passion, outrage and thoughtfulness
envelop you,
you thank your god for that veil
which protects you
from the full force of her humanity.
